American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) has been helping passengers who evacuated from US Airways Flight 1549 after it made an emergency water landing in the frigid Hudson River this afternoon when its two engines failed. Approximately 73 volunteers and employees have been involved in the relief effort.
As of 9 p.m. tonight:
- Chapter relief workers rushed to the World Yacht Marina and the NY Waterways Pier in Manhattan to provide blankets, sweat suits, socks, warm drinks and snacks, as well as counseling for passengers and crew members who safely evacuated the plane.
- ARC/GNY mental health counselors were on the buses to comfort passengers who were transported from the NY Piers to the U.S. Airways Family Assistance Center at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Queens where counseling services are also being provided. Additionally, working with the New York Clothing Bank, ARC/GNY has secured replacement clothing which is being provided at the Center as needed.
- The Chapter has stationed an Emergency Response Vehicle overnight at Warren and Terrace Streets at Battery Park to support first responders and site investigators with hot beverages and meals as they work through a night of frigid temperatures. Additionally, 150 meals will be available for tomorrow morning.
- More than 40 volunteers and employees have been available to staff ARC/GNY’s Emergency Operations Center, which will remain open throughout the night with a minimal staff.
